Working Lands

Working lands represent one of the best hopes for conservation.

We envision a future where our grasslands, arid-lands and forests provide the quality and quantity of habitat needed to sustain healthy bird populations while also meeting the country's needs for food, fiber, energy, minerals, and recreation opportunities in a way that addresses current and historic inequities that exist across these systems.

This regional initiative is part of the National Audubon Society's Working Lands strategy.

Our goals:

  • Address declines in grassland bird populations by protecting and restoring habitat for breeding and wintering grassland birds.

  • Advance legislation and policy change at the state and federal level that incorporates the needs of birds into the management of working lands.

  • Contribute to scientific research that will improve the management of wildlife habitat on working lands.

  • Build broad public support for restoration of wildlife habitat on working lands.

  • Address historic inequities in access to and safety in outdoor spaces for marginalized populations.
