Arizona WatchList
Compiled by the Arizona Important Bird Areas (IBA) Program 47 WatchList Species in Arizona: Red Species: 11, Yellow Species: 36 (Nov. 29, 2007, edit 3/3/2009). The placement of a bird on or off the WatchList is based on the assessment of four factors: population size, range size, threats, and population trend (Panjabi et al. 2005). RED SPECIES (in bold) Are essentially a list of globally threatened birds of Highest National Concern that occur in the United States. YELLOW SPECIES are rare and declining species that would join the red list should they begin to decline in population (or accelerate declines that have already begun) or decline for long enough to cause their populations or range sizes to fall below certain thresholds.
Species are listed by breeding/wintering status in Arizona.
- Breeding Species: breeding populations in the state,
- Wintering Species: over-wintering populations in the state
- “also Win.”= Winter or “Breed”= Breeding, indicates separate areas of wintering populations and breeding populations within the state
Migrants and vagrants were not included in this list, which focuses on those species for which Arizona has a stewardship responsibility for either breeding or wintering habitats.
