Burrowing Owl Relocation: For more than 10 years, Audubon has partnered with the Wild At Heart Raptor Center to provide volunteer labor necessary to relocate displaced Burrowing Owls (Athene cunicularia). Once common throughout central Arizona, these small, ground-dwelling owls are disappearing rapidly due to development. The relocation process is several steps: building artifical burrows for the birds (they don't dig their own); building temporary release tents that hold owls for a month after burrows are complete; and finally taking down the tents so the owls fly free. Learn more here. Work this fall will be in Marana (near Tucson) and in Hyder--about 1 hour west of Phoenix. In addition to Audubon's volunteer days, Wild At Heart hosts additional workdays, some on weekdays. Please sign-up directly with Wild At Heart here to be alerted to other projects.
